Most people start out with a repeated addition algorithm as the way of working out multiplications they haven’t yet learned. Here are some algorithms that give you answers to the nine times table problems. Every one takes it for granted that if you can learn these algorithms then by following the steps blindly you will always get the right answer (even if you don’t understand why they work). In particular, learning basic arithmetic is all about learning algorithms. ![]() In primary schools, pupils have long learnt about algorithms, but just haven’t called them that. The 9-times table is my favourite as it has a beautiful pattern behind it. While you do learn them its also nice to know algorithms that help work them out, and as a backup when your mind goes blank. Its good to learn your times tables by heart, not least because knowing them makes division easier.
